From July 1st until December 31st, 2025, Denmark takes on its 8th turn of presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The Council of the European Union, which serves to amend and approve, or veto proposals made by the European Commission (the EU's main governing body), runs a presidency on a 6-month term between each member state of the Union. In the first half of this year, Poland took control of the presidency, focusing on the security of Europe and trans-Atlantic partnerships. Now, Denmark takes the wheel, building a "strong Europe in a changing world".
In a world marked by uncertainty, global competition and regional conflict, the Danish presidency is striving for European unity and the ability of Europe to act in its own right. Denmark seeks to do this through enlargement of the EU, and advancing candidate states of Moldova, Ukraine, and other candidate states in the West Balkans. Denmark will also work to improve connections with the UK and other non-EU countries, to make Europe more united.
Denmark is also very focused on defence, having followed Poland in the EU Presidency trio. In the face of a changing geopolitical landscape, Denmark is fully prepared to do what it takes to maintain European defence. This will be completed through innovation and investment, continuing to provide aid for Ukraine, supporting green development projects, and working towards Europe being able to defend itself by 2030.
Denmark had last held its presidency of the Council of the European Union from January-June 2012. Trios of presidency are always held in the same order, however, when the UK left the union, each trio was pushed 6 months forward.
Denmark's major works in this presidency will also include a green transition, which will tie in closely with a self-sufficient union. This includes investment in affordable energy, clean energy, and energy that is independent of Russian energy following its imperialist invasion of Ukraine.
This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Denmark’s presidency. You can always find more information on the European Commission and Denmark 2025 EU.

Denmark is ready to work closely to ensure that the EU’s presidency clicks perfectly into place. God arbejdslyst, Danmark!
